The Jacksonville Symphony kicks off the new year with a Masterworks Series program, “La Mer,” featuring works by Schumann, DeBussy and Faure at 8 p.m. at the Times-Union Center. Courtney Lewis conducts and guest cellist Nicolas Altstaedt joins the symphony. Tickets range from $25 to $74.

It’s a bit of a drive to Interlachen, but it might be worth it for the 4th annual Giant Shiitake Mushroom Fest. There are workshops on Shiitake history, Shiitake growing and cooking with Shiitake, plus live music, Shiitake log plugging, oyster and wine cap mushroom raising demonstrations and prizes for the largest locally grown Shiitake. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the old Town Hall.
SUNDAY, JAN. 10
The Gala of the Royal Horses brings Spain’s famed dancing Andalusians, Friesians, Lipizzaners and Arabians to Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena, along with flamenco dancers. The performance is at 4 p.m. Tickets range from $25 to $60.
TUESDAY, JAN. 12
“42nd Street,” a musical about a musical, opens an eight-show run at the Times-Union Center. The show, featuring the hit numbers “I Only Have Eyes for You,” “We’re in the Money” and “Shuffle Off to Buffalo,” is one of the highlights of the FSCJ Artist Series season. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 8 p.m. Friday, 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday and 1:30 and 7 p.m. Sunday. Tickets range from $38.50 to $88.50.
