St. Augustine Race Week is fast approaching with sailboats of all sizes registering to compete April 9-12. The four-day regatta coincides with St. Augustine’s 450th birthday and celebrates 450 years of sailing in and out of St. Augustine.

Sailors from Savannah to Daytona are scheduled to race offshore in yachts from 32 feet to 50 feet long. Downtown racing on April 9-10 will feature boats 33 feet and under. The public is encouraged to come and cheer along the sailors as they race north of the Bridge of Lions in the Matanzas River up past the Castillo de San Marcos. The race announcer located on the bayfront at the north end of Avenida Menendez will call the progress of the race to the public.

The public is also invited to attend the after-race parties for racers and guests April 9-10 at the St. Augustine City Marina Lawn, just south of the Bridge of Lions.

Live music featuring local bands will kick off the parties starting at 4 p.m. Thursday. Local favorite I-Vibes, a Reggae Sunday popular band, will be followed by one of the hottest party bands in town, the OhNo Band. Food by Meehan’s Irish Pub and libations from Red Stripe, Miller Lite and Pusser’s Rum will be available for sale.

Preston Pohl, a 2014 finalist on “The Voice,” will fill up the Friday night air immediately following Jacksonville’s Number 1 Reggae band, The 418 Band. The party begins at 4 p.m.

Junior Sailors will compete on April 11-12 in the bayfront. The best viewing will be at the Castillo de San Marcos and south along the seawall.

There is still time to register to join the sailing races. For information, go to SARW2015.com.
